Expand your factions with this free mod

Tyranid Mod is a free video game utility that adds a new race to the popular Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. Developed by the Tyranid Mod Team, this mod takes a fictional race from the tabletop version of the game and includes it as a playable faction. This race has already been featured in the sequel game, Dawn of War II, but the developers still aim to present it here and its expansions.

Play the fan-favorite race

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is a 2004 military science fiction real-time strategy video game developed by Relic Entertainment. It is based on Games Workshop's tabletop wargame of mostly the same name and has three expansion packs. There are four playable armies to choose from in this game—all of which are fighting for control over strategic locations on the battlefield. However, there are more races available from the original game, like the Tyranids.

The Tyranids are an intergalactic predator race that’s notable for being ruled by a hive mind. They devour worlds using various bioengineered Tyranid forms. With the Tyranid Mod, you can add this fearsome species to the first game. This mod is only for one race, but it includes almost everything that you could expect from an original campaign. For one, the alien race’s unit original models and textures have been painstakingly crafted for authenticity.

Gameplay-wise, this race has also been given adjustments that would befit its canonical lore. Unlike other factions, this one doesn’t have deployable vehicles and instead makes up for it with additional stats in combat—all without becoming too powerful. Unfortunately, this meant that some popular units in the tabletop version had to be excluded for the game to stay well-balanced. However, the overall execution is satisfying. You can even use the Hive Mind for special actions.

Needs more adjustments

All in all, the Tyranid Mod is a great addition to your Dawn of War playthroughs. It’s not available for all of the expansion packs, but it meshes well with other mods if you use the Ultimate Apocalypse mod. Compared to the ones in DoW 2, the race here looks much better and definitely deserves the fans’ love for how accurate it’s been made.
